Bawutj – High Tide is the late, great Ms. Wanambi’s last body of work and represents the high point of her artistic practice. The exhibition explores the interplay of the tidal waters around the massive stone monoliths at the mouth of Trial Bay as it opens into the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Shimmer, or the appearance of spiritual energy, has always been at the hand of great Yolŋu artists. Dhambit used the black sand from her own Marakulu clan lands at Yalanba. Sand so fine and riven with Mica it sparkles like sunshine on water.”

The original spirits of this area remain present and their journey from life through death and rebirth is mirrored in the actions of the tide.”

The family of Ms. Wanambi have authorised the use of her name in written form but request that it not be spoken aloud in the presence of people from Arnhem Land or in the Miwatj region. Her spirit has a long journey to go on to return to her origin point. Calling her name aloud could distract and delay her spirit’s return in a new form.
