KIM AH SAM, ERICA MURIATA, CLARE JAQUE VASQUEZ & JANET FIELDHOUSE IN ‘GATHERING: NATIONAL FIRST NATIONS WEAVING SALON’ AT LIGHT SQUARE GALLERY

31.08.2025

Presented by Ku Arts, this exhibition brings together works by 48 artists representing diverse Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nations in a celebration of contemporary weaving practice, cultural resilience
and artistic innovation. Curated by Emerging First Nations Curators Marli Macumba and Kristal Matthews, with mentoring from Hannah Presley, Senior Curator, Art Museums at University of Melbourne, Gathering offers audiences an opportunity to experience the diversity and dynamism of fibre practices and is a testament to the strength of First Nations’ storytelling, intergenerational knowledge sharing, the interrelatedness that exists and new connections to be made between weavers from across the country.

Gathering has been developed through the Ku Arts Emerging First Nations Curators Program with program and development support from Mel Henderson, Arts Program Producer, Ku Arts.

Hear from Erica Muriata on how her work relates to transformations, the theme of the Day Two Symposium, Sunday O7.O9.2O25, 9:3O — 12:3Opm, to be held at the Mercury (next to JamFactory).
Moderated by Hannah Presley.
