‘Blue Art Journal’, previously known as ‘Art Monthly Australasia’, is Australia’s exclusive digital and print publication dedicated to transnational First Nations visual arts, craft, and design. Set to officially launch in the latter part of 2O25, the journal’s purpose is to reflect the strength of First Peoples and communities.
Throughout 2O23 and 2O24, Art Monthly transitioned to an Indigenous-led organisation. The Board is comprised of Chair Erin Vink (Ngiyampaa), Deputy Chair Hayley Millar Baker (Gunditjmara), Dean Cross (Worimi), Emily McDaniel(Wiradjuri), Georgia Mokak (Djugun), Katerina Teaiwa (Banaban/I-Kiribati), Nathan Pohio (Waitaha/Kati Mamoe/Ngāi Tahu), Warraba Weatherall (Kamilaroi) and Treasurer Nick Leete.
For nearly two decades, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writers, art critics and artists have publicly and repeatedly expressed their concerns about the scarcity of meaningful criticism of First Nations art in Australia. Considering this, ‘Blue Art Journal’ has committed to elevating global Indigenous ways of knowing and understanding by preferencing multimodal approaches to reading, writing, listening and speaking about Indigenous visual art knowledges. ‘Blue Art Journal’ aims to transform how critical and experimental Indigenous voices are sustained and engaged across digital and print publishing.
Over the coming months ‘Blue Art Journal’s’ new identity designed by Gulumerridjin (Larrakia)/Wardaman and KarraJarri artist Jenna Lee will be rolled out culminating in the launch of its new website.
