Naomi Hobson’s new body of work is composed of daring flair and virtuosity, and demonstrates the consistently evolving boundaries of Hobson’s creative practice. Her paintings are a rich visual documentation of her Ancestral Country and the stories and places associated with it.
This is the colourful abundance and chaotic energy of the bush life during the wet season in Cape York. Dense layering invokes memory and experience and then my feelings push my brush strokes this way and that way. The colours become vivid, too. I am re-creating my Dreaming Country that is known and felt.”
As the primary source of her artistic inspiration, Hobson’s Country is captured in intimate and often unnoticed details of the Land, from the changing colours of the leaves during the passing dry season to the shimmering of light across the surface of the water’s edge.
Through her intuitive exploration of colour, composition and mark-making, Hobson translates stories and places from her Country with remarkable intensity, inviting viewers into her lived reality.
