Celebrate the opening weekend of Tony Albert: Not a Souvenir at the MCA with a weaving demonstration and workshop led by represented Girramay artist and weaver Erica Muriata. A close collaborator of Tony Albert’s, she recently reunited with him to create new work for his solo exhibition at the MCA.
Mindi basket weaving is a cultural tradition of the Girramay, Jirrbal and Gulnay peoples. Used for carrying small items such as message sticks, mindi baskets preserve cultural knowledge and are works of art. This workshop is a special opportunity to learn about this important cultural practice from a renowned traditional weaver. All are invited to participate, with non-traditional materials to be used.
This program has limited capacity. Early arrival is recommended. All materials supplied.
