KENT MORRIS CURATES ‘BLAK IN-JUSTICE: INCARCERATION AND RESILIENCE’ AT HEIDE

22.04.2025

Through a compelling selection of artworks, Blak In-Justice: Incarceration and Resilience calls attention to the pressing issue of Indigenous incarceration in Australia. Curated by gallery-represented artist Kent Morris (Barkindji), the exhibition is the first of its kind to be presented within a major public museum in Australia.

The exhibition features works by prominent First Nations artists, including Vernon Ah Kee, Gordon Bennett, Destiny Deacon, Julie Dowling, Jimmy Pike, and Judy Watson. These works address the overrepresentation of Indigenous Australians in the criminal legal system and the crisis of deaths in custody. Their compelling contributions are displayed alongside the exceptional creative achievements of former and current prison inmates, many of whom have reconnected with their culture and Country through The Torch program. Notable participants include Thelma Beeton, Stacey Edwards, Robby Wirramanda, and Sean Miller. Additionally, works by Jimmy Pike, Albert Namatjira, Gordon Syron, and Kevin Gilbert, who experienced incarceration during their lives, are featured.
