IN MEMORY OF MRS. D. MARIKA — PIONEER, ARTIST, CULTURAL LEADER

10.05.2025

We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Mrs. D. Marika, and to the community at Buku Larrngay Mulka.
Mrs. D. Marika was a trailblazer — the first Yolŋu woman to paint sacred designs on bark. From an early age, she was entrusted with profound cultural knowledge by her father, the esteemed bark painter and senior statesman Mawalan Marika. In doing so, she not only honoured her heritage but expanded the horizons of Yolŋu art and women’s roles within it.
Her artworks carry the authority and spiritual resonance of generations. They are deeply rooted in Country, culture, and ceremony.
Her artworks stand as a testament to her cultural authority, her commitment to truth, and her enduring creative spirit.
Mrs. D. Marika was not only an artist but also a staunch advocate for Yolŋu youth. Through her dedication to traditional practices, she worked relentlessly to ensure that the next generation could walk strongly in both worlds, carrying forward the knowledge and values of their ancestors.
She leaves behind an indelible legacy — of beauty, strength, and sovereignty.
