It is with great sadness that we recognise the passing of celebrated artist and Ernabella community leader Mr. R. Jack.
A senior Pitjantjatjara man, Mr. R. Jack was renowned for his striking hand-built ceramic forms, the surfaces of which were permeated with stories of his country, law, and faith. Working across both ceramics and painting at Ernabella Arts, he brought together traditional tjukurpa and Christian teachings with deep sensitivity and insight. His work often depicted important ancestral beings and bush foods, as well as biblical stories rendered in a shared visual language.
His later works also celebrated his younger years as a stockman —years he often recalled as his happiest. Beyond his artistic practice, Mr. Jack was a dedicated community pastor.
We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family and the community at Ernabella.
