LIVES
TOWNSVILLE, QLD

We are living right now in one of the most important points within our timeline – now more than ever it is paramount that we capture the memories and stories of our Grandmothers. Growing up under multiple generations of gentle and resilient Gomeroi/Kamilaroi women has shaped and crafted the lens that I see the world through. My works are delicate and evoke a sense of fragility and vulnerability against the unwavering resilience of my Country.”

— Clare Jaque Vasquez

Clare Jaque Vasquez is an emerging Aboriginal artist from the Kamilaroi/Gomeroi nation.  The artist grew up in both an urban environment in her younger years and then on her Grandmother’s Country in north-west New South Wales in a small country town near the mission and station where her family lived.

Her art gently showcases unique memories and moments from being raised with three generations of Kamilaroi/Gomeroi women under the one roof, navigating the after effects of change.

Clare’s works capture stories and weaving practices in a raised textural form leveraging natural and contemporary art tools to apply texture.  These tools include different natural brushes, fingertips, branches, sticks and palm tree fibres, and are specifically used to connect the works with Country and self.  The artist works in layers to inimitably apply synthetic polymer paint and impasto textural mediums which appear to be etched, embedded and scarred onto the canvas.
